First Scrimmage         Away            Franklin County

                                                                        Jamboree

                Result:             Won 2 – Lost 4

 

            The Junior Bengals traveled to Franklin County for their first scrimmage of the year.  The Bengals took on 6 different teams in a Jamboree format playing each for 20 minutes and rotating.  Good opportunity for a lot of reps for the young Bengals.

 

            The Bengals second scrimmage is against Northside on Wed. 8/19/2009 at home.

                Result:             Lost overall 3-2

 

            The Junior Bengals hosted Northside Wednesday.  The scoreboard showed Northside scoring three times to Bassett’s two.  However, Bassett outscored Northside in the game like situations 1 – 0.  The younger Bengals are working hard in preparation for their season opener this coming week.

 

            The Bengals open their season on Thurs. 8/27/2009 at Carroll County.

            The Junior Bengals traveled to Carroll County on Thursday to take on the Cavaliers.  The young Bengals struggled to get anything going on offense and was up against a very good Carroll County team that executes extremely well.  The Bengals are showing noticeable improvement daily.

 

            The Bengals play again on Thurs. 9/3/2009 at Home vs. Patrick Henry.

            The Junior Bengals played their home opener this past Thursday against the Patriots from Patrick Henry in Roanoke.  The visitors out-executed the young Bengals in recording the win.

 

            The Bengals play again on Thurs. 9/10/2009 at Jefferson Forest.

                Result:             Lost                 14 - 8

 

            The long trip towards Lynchburg was the most impressive showing from the young Bengal team; however, a final of 14 to 8 was the closing score keeping the junior squad winless. The hard fought touchdown was scored in the last 7 seconds of the game by Eddie Bowman. Eddie also scored the two point conversion. The entire JV defense played well. After giving up 14 points early in the first on offensive turnovers, the Bassett defense pulled three straight shutout quarters. Mackenzie Clark at QB deserves a lot of credit for showing toughness against a very aggressive Cavalier defense.

 

            The Bengals play again on Thurs. 9/17/2009 at home vs. Christiansburg.

            The Junior Bengals got off to a slow start at home against a very talented Christiansburg team and had trouble controlling them all night.  Turnovers seemed to be the problem area as at times, the turnovers fell right into the hands of Christiansburg players who would return for a score. 

 

            The Bengals play again on Thurs. 9/24/2009 at home vs. Franklin County.

            The Junior Bengals played host to the Eagles from Franklin County on Thursday.  The defense played extremely well, holding a talented Eagle team to 16 points the majority of the game.  The offense moved the ball, but couldn’t put one in for a score.  The Junior Bengals are showing improvement from week to week and needs to keep their heads up and keep battling, brighter days are ahead.

 

            The Bengals play again on Thurs. 10/08/2009 at Amherst County.

                Result:             DID NOT PLAY

 

            The Junior Bengals traveled to Amherst County on Thursday, only to find that the game was not taking place.  It turned out that Amherst is not allowed to play Junior Varsity contest against teams that are over 100 miles from the school.  The coaches at Amherst was cooperative in letting the Junior Bengals scrimmage their J.V. Squad so the trip was not wasted.

 

            The Bengals play at home on Thursday, 10/15/2009 against Martinsville.

                Result:     Lost   35 - 10

 

            The Junior Bengals hosted the Bulldogs from Martinsville Monday Night due to the game being postponed last Thursday because of the weather.  The Bengals jumped out to an early 7 – 0 lead.  Martinsville tied the score at 7 – 7, but a pick six and a long bomb made the halftime score 21 – 7 Martinsville.  The Junior Bengals tried to play catch up the entire second half to no avail.

 

            The Bengals play at home on Thursday, 10/22/2009 against Tunstall.

                Result:     Lost   23 - 0

 

            The Junior Varisty squad continued their struggles to get a victory on Thursday as they faced a well disciplined Tunstall team. The offense moved the ball to the short end of the field a few times only to have their drives snuffed out by turnovers. The defense played hard but could not overcome the field advantage of the Tunstall Trojans. The end result was a 23-0 loss for the JV team. The Junior Bengals have two attempts left against Patrick and Magna Vista to get a win on the board

 

            The Bengals play at home on Thursday, 10/29/2009 against Patrick County.

                Result:     Lost   32 - 28

 

            On their final home game of the season the Junior Varisty team met the Patrick County Cougars with an early first quarter score from Daniel Martin. The Cougars answered but were denied the PAT. On the next kick-off Daniel Martin returned the ball to the end-zone again. Then it was Mackenzie Clark who hit pay dirt before the end of the half making it 21-12. The offense for Patrick County would score on their first possession of the second half, just before Daniel Martin found Quantra Freeman down field for a pass of more than 50 yards. However, with the score 28 to 18, the Cougars got on the board two more times closing the game at 28 to 32. 

 

            The Bengals play at Magna Vista on Thursday, 11/05/2009 against Magna Vista.

Game #10           Away            Magna Vista

                                                                       

                Result:     Won   7 – 6

 

            In their final game of the season the Junior Varsity Bengals defeated inter-county rivals at Magna Vista with a score of 7 to 6. The young Bengal offense had a difficult time moving the ball both on the ground and in the air. The Warriors of Magna Vista played tough but turned the ball over multiple times, once giving Bassett a scoring opportunity in the red zone. Deunte Wimbush punched the ball in from 4 yards out and Gunnar Robertson added the PAT to give Bassett the first score of the night. Magna Vista quickly answered that touchdown with a short pass, but failed to complete the two-point conversion. The rest of the evening was a defensive battle on both sides of the ball. Congratulations to the JV squad on a great win!! Despite the 1 and 8 record, every member of the team has shown much improvement and heart on the tough road to victory.
