Junior Varsity Football

Result: 3-1-1
The
Junior Varsity Football team began the season in the annual Jamboree hosted by
Franklin County. The young Bengals
played to a 3-1-1 record on the day, playing Cave Spring, Franklin County,
Floyd County, Magna Vista, and James River.
Their only loss came in the hands of the Eagles from Franklin County.
The
Bengals play again on Friday, August 19th at home vs. Richlands at 5 pm

The
Junior Varsity Football team hosted the first game of a double header with the
Junior Varsity Team from Richlands. The team fought hard on both sides of the
ball and brought home a win 20 – 14.
Congratulations to the younger Bengals as they are to open up on the
road against Carroll County.

The
Junior Varsity Football team traveled to Carroll County on Thursday & only
got to watch a half of the 8th Grade game that was being played
before them. Their game was rained out and
was rescheduled for September 26th.

The
Junior Varsity Football team began their season a week later due to the rainout
last week. The younger Bengals hosted
Patrick Henry from Roanoke and played a very tough game trailing 21 – 0 for
most of the game. The Patriots added a 4th
quarter score to take a 27 – 0 lead.
Kerry Scales put the Bengals on the scoreboard in the closing minutes
and Jemontae Finney added the two extra points for
the final score.

The
younger Bengals travelled to Jefferson Forest this week. Things started out
slow as the Bengals fumbled on the opening kickoff giving the Cavaliers a short
field to work with. The Cavaliers scored on the ensuing drive 7-0 Jefferson
Forest. Events unfolded badly for the Bengals with another fumble on the first
offensive drive of the night in which the Cavaliers capitalized on bringing the
score to 14-0 Jefferson Forest. The Cavaliers were able to put another TD on
against the Bengals defense bringing the score to 21-0. In the final minutes of
the first half the Bengals showed life by marching down the field and scoring
on a Kerry Scales deep pass to Jamantae Finney. The
ensuing successful two point conversion was called back on a holding penalty
and the Bengals were unable to make up the ground lost making the score 21-6.
The young Bengals played hard and showed their heart but fell to the Cavaliers
38-6.

Bengals play again on Thursday, September 15th at home vs.
Christiansburg at 6:30 pm.

The
young Bengals fought gallantly against the Christiansburg Blue Demons while
defending Ed Bassett Stadium. The Demons were able to score early on their
opening drive but failed to score on their two point conversion. After that it
was a hard fought battle on the gridiron by both teams. The score changed after
a botched snap to the punter sailed over and the Demons recovered. Working with
a short field the Demons scored again but was unsuccessful in converting the
two points making the score 12-0 as the 4th quarter began. Unfortunately the
Bengals succumbed to injuries when ILB Chad Wiggington
sprained his ankle on a successful fake punt and was unable to return to the
game. DeVontae Jordan also was injured when he broke
his wrist after being tackled at the end of a long run. The Demons capitalized
on this and scored. This time the two point conversion was good making the
score 20-0 Christiansburg. Although the Bengals showed their heart and never
gave up on the game they were unable to come out on top with the final score being
20-0 Christiansburg.
The
Bengals play again on Thursday, September 22nd at
Fieldale-Collinsville Middle School vs. Franklin County at 6:30 pm. The game had to be moved due the re-sodding
work done on the home field at Bassett.

The
Young Bengals took on the Franklin County Eagles at Fieldale-Collinsville
Middle School this week. The Bengals have fought through injuries the past few
weeks and battled the Eagles from start to finish on Thursday night. The
Bengals held a staunch defense in the early stages but were unable to stop the
Eagles ground attack giving up 38 points. The Bengals fought hard and were able
to put up points late in the 2nd half with a touchdown run by Thomas Craig.
Quentin Grant ran the ball exceptionally hard but was unable to make the two
point conversion. The Eagles won with a score of 38-6.

Bengals play again on Monday, September 26th at Carroll County (make up game) & Thursday at Hidden Valley at 7:15 pm.

This
week the Bengals travelled to Carrol County to take
on the Cavaliers. As the rain fell the Bengals fought tough and heroically but
were unable to contain the Cavaliers and their well executed
reverse play. The Bengals put up a season high of 22 points against the
Cavaliers' staunch defense. Kerry Scales returned a kickoff for a touchdown and
also threw a touchdown pass to Jamantae Finney during
the second half. Mikey Moran ran in the final
touchdown for the Bengals offense. Unfortunately the Bengals potent offense
could not match that of Carroll County with the final score being 44-22 Carroll
County

Bengals play again on Thursday, September 29th at Hidden Valley at
7:15 pm.

The
Bengals took the field at Bogle Stadium to face the
Hidden Valley Titans. The Bengals fought hard the first half but were unable to
put points on the board. Going into half time the Titans were up 14-0. The
Bengals were unable to establish control of the football during the 3rd quarter
with the Titans jumping ahead 21-0. During the 4th Quarter injuries and
frustration got the best of the Bengals where they allowed the Titans to score
again bringing the lead to 34-0. The Bengals were able to march down the field
on their last possession to score with a TD pass by PJ Hairston to Jamantae Finney with 44 seconds left to spare during
regulation. The Bengals fall to 0-6 and will open up district play at Tunstall.

6:00 p.m.

The
Bengals opened up district play against the Tunstall
Trojans Thursday night. The Trojans struck early by returning the opening
kickoff for a TD. The Bengals answered the call right back marching down the
field for their own TD by Chris Martin. The Bengals and Trojans battled back
and forth with a score of 24-14 ending the 1st half. Low numbers in the Bengals
began to show in the last quarters but the Bengals still fought hard by scoring
a season high 28 points. Chris Martin collected another rushing TD on a QB
sneak while also throwing for a TD to P.J. Hairston. The final tally of the
Bengals opening district game was 46-28. The Bengals go on a much needed bye
week to recover from injuries.

p.m.

The
Bengals travelled to Martinsville for this week's matchup. The Bulldogs were
successful on their opening drive scoring on a run from 5 yds
out with the ensuing PAT blocked by the Bengal defense. From their on out the Bengals stout defense held them. At
halftime the score was 6-0 Martinsville. On the opening kickoff, however, the
Bulldogs showed life when they returned a kick to the Bulldog 5. They scored on
the next play with a TD pass. The Bengals defense stopped them twice in the redzone and recorded one interception by Kerry Scales and 2
fumble recoveries by the other Bengals. Bassett made a spectacular comeback.
Kerry Scales was able to record a 15 yard rushing TD late in the 2nd half. With
3:30 left in the 4th the Bengals scored again on with a Kerry Scales pass to DeVontae Jordan for a 35 yard TD reception. Unfortunately,
after a flurry of penalties on the Bengals for encroachment and excessive
celebration the Bulldogs set up deep in Bengal territory. The defense held them
on 3 and 1 on the 2 yard line. On 4th and 1 with 48 seconds left in regulation
the Bulldogs kicked a heartbreaking fieldgoal making
the score 17-14 Bulldogs.

Bengals play again on Thursday, October 27th at Patrick County at
6:00 p.m.

Result: Lost 42 – 20
The
Bassett Bengals faced off against the Patrick County Cougars on Thursday. It
was a high scoring game with both teams scoring 20 or more points. The rushing
attack was key for the Bengals as DeVontae Jordan and
Kerry Scales consisted of the main assault each recording a TD run. Unfortunately two key defensive stands by the Cougars
in the Bengals redzone and the potent Cougar ground
game led to another Bengal lose. The final score 42-20 Patrick County.
The
Bengals play their last game of the season at home vs
Magna Vista at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 3rd.

Result: Lost 54 - 34
The
final game of the Bengals season ended in an offensive shootout with the Magna
Vista Warriors. The Bengals were able to jump to a 14-6 lead during the first
half. Unfortunately for the Bengals the Warriors were able to tack on a
touchdown with 0.4 seconds left on the game clock to go into halftime with the
Bengals first lead of the season 14-12. The Warriors answered early to take a 18-14 lead. From that point each team's offense was able
to dissect the opposing defense. The game maintained a 12 point difference
throughout the second half in favor of the Warriors. The Warriors late in the
4th put the Bengals in a hole that they couldn't climb out of. The final score being 54-34 Magna Vista.
